Be Who You Are Mentoring
Mentoring is one of the oldest and most sacred of relationships. Plato mentored Aristotle, who in turn mentored Alexander The Great. Annie Sullivan mentored Helen Keller, who in turn mentored us all in living fully, no matter our handicap. Yoda mentored Luke Skywalker, and the Force that was strong in “that one” grew stronger.
In each case, the teacher appeared when the student was ready, and each mentor saw the opportunity to create a better world by influencing those who would become the influencers. That’s how I see my calling as a mentor. That’s how I see you.
What you bring…
This part is simple. You bring you. Your hopes and dreams, fears and habits, relationships and gifts, yet to blossom potential and “flaws,” and anything else you’ve got to create a life with. You bring all the beautiful accomplishments (including the ones you’re tempted to underscore and play down) as well as all the ways you sell out for less than what you really want and think you might be capable of. By taking on a mentor, what you are saying is that you’re ready to get on with yourself for the betterment of the whole wide world. Bring that intent and miracles can happen.
What I bring…
This is where the rubber meets the road, right? You want to know what a potential mentor has to offer and if that will be enough to make a significant change. Fair enough.
First, let me say upfront what I don’t have to offer. I don’t have YOUR answers. I have many processes to help you get to your answers, including ways to bypass your unique roadblocks and subterfuges. As we work, I will also have intuitive insights as to why those complexities get so sticky and how to de-stick them. But again, these are not my answers for your life.
It might help to think of it like giving birth to a baby. I can mentor you in the best processes known to womankind, and troubleshoot problems in ways that make you want to get up and dance. But it’s always going to be your body and your baby. Ultimately, no one can do it for you. And that’s a good thing, because the most inauthentic thing you can do is live someone else’s life, someone else’s way, because they supposedly know “better.” No one knows better than you.
On to what I do offer: A happy life of my own. That’s vital, because you must ask yourself if your potential mentor is successfully living her own truths and passions. In my case, I had a completely inauthentic life, a sense I would never fit in, and a tragic childhood. Yet I have gone on to have a truly happy life, day after day, doing what I love while loving the people I’m with. I have abundant opportunities to express myself creatively—which I do without suffering from procrastination or self-sabotage. I live in a warm, welcoming home and have an amazing relationship with my husband and children (ages 24, 22, 19 and 15). My life is not perfect, as no life is. But it is good, happy, and in constant evolution.
I also have a deep capacity to listen to what is being said, and what is not being said. My attention is on YOU. Your life. Your unfolding. I’ve always had a knack for “getting” others by seeing how they put themselves together internally and externally. Over time, I’ve developed the ability to effectively, gently and clearly show you what is beautiful that you might not be able to see, what is outdated that you may not even be aware is running in the background, and what can be done right now to get out of your own way. I champion the parts of you that are screaming for attention but get pushed aside, and help you remember what you once knew about yourself, but have forgotten. I stop the “running around in circles” and jumpstart the “moving forward while enjoying now.”
That’s my gift. That’s my offering. That’s why I mentor.
What we do…
Again, it’s important to talk first about what we don’t do. We don’t make lists of goals and things to do to meet those goals. That’s a perpetual carrot in front of the horse, when life is really all about right here, right now. We also don’t do talk therapy, including delving deeply into your childhood issues and delving at length in your history of traumas. Those who work with me have usually already done enough of that important inner work and are ready for a different process.
As for what we will do, the basic premise is this: When you clearly look at and understand the choices you make—all the why’s and why not’s—you open a whole new set of possibilities that are closer to your ideal than before. So we look. We become fully conscious. We consider all the ways you think about yourself and your life, the way you express that self in the world (or not), and the way you bring the resulting experiences you have back into the loop of thinking/doing/being to change the way you think/do/be the next time around. We refine the process to eliminate more of what you don’t want, and get more of what you do want. It is a kind of “rinse and repeat” until you’re ready to move on to even bigger and better options, which is usually pretty quick. The process builds on itself, so that each new area is informed by the joy of the last, until life itself is joyful. Not always perfect. Not always easy. But consistently joyfully and authentically YOU.
We also remember as we go along to honor your life as it is now. We will take the time to revel in what is right. Because in all likelihood, if you’d been honored for what is right and good about you all along (this is the task of a healthy community, by the way), you wouldn’t buy into the idea that so very much is wrong. You’d get up in the morning fully expecting that you’ll do even more of what you love with the confidence that nightfall will once again bring sighs of gratitude.
That is what we are after. That is what we are doing. That is how you Be Who You Are.
Logistics and Fees…
The set up goes like this… We talk at a regular time each week for the first three weeks of every month. Sessions last 50 minutes, and are by phone (or use Skype.com for those out of the US). This gives us plenty of time to go deep, work strong, then have a rest to let things "perk." The fee structure is on a sliding scale, from $315-$450 a month, depending on your ability to pay (you decide). Payment is due in full the 1st of each month (I take checks by mail or credit cards through Paypal.com), and we work on a month-to-month basis. Most of my clients find that 6 months to a year creates profound change, but even one month can help in a specific area. I will encourage you to move on as soon as it feels you’d be better served to do so—usually about the time you can say to yourself…“you know, in this situation, I bet Robin would suggest….”
To schedule a first call (we do real work from the start, so this is NOT a "sales" call) at the special introductory rate of $75, contact me today at Robin@BeWhoYouAre.com or call 443-458-5236, EST.
